Diet for cleansing & detoxification

The Basics

A few things to remember while you cleanse and detoxify:

Yeast eats sugar. Most books on cleansing promote limiting or abstaining from sugars while cleansing. The human body stores excess sugar in the liver as glycogen, whereas plants store excess sugar as starch. Therefore, limiting consumption of high starch vegetables such as potatoes may be helpful. Wheat bread and wheat pasta can be irritating to the system, as well as refined flours and starches. Many practitioners recommend: Wheat alternatives such as: quinoa, amaranth, millet, basmati rice, brown rice, kamut, buckwheat, wild rice. These make excellent pastas and hot cereals.

Foods to emphasize while cleansing

Vegetables & Protein

Vegetables: either steamed or raw (raw, if your digestion is strong).

Protein: such as organic free-range chicken, turkey, beef, wild fish, & eggs. You may notice your digestion greatly improve by eating proteins with vegetables, and carbohydrates (whole grain pastas, breads) with vegetables at another meal.

Flax Seed and Water

Organic Flax Oil: 1 tablespoon of organic cold pressed flax oil per day. This Essential Fatty Acid not only protects the cells but also helps keep the integrity of the cell wall.

Organic Ground Flax Seeds: 2 tablespoons twice daily

Water: Drink at least 1/2 your body weight in oz’s (150 LB. = 75 oz.) Water intake is recommended to be increased to flush the body.
A Quick Overview of Cleansing Diet Suggestions


  • Butter (preferably organic), Ghee (clarified butter)
  • Eggs (natural/ organic )
  • Plain, Organic Yogurt, unsweetened Kefir (have very little milk sugar )
  • Unsweetened Carob or raw Cocao
  • Herbal Teas (e.g. Chamomile, Peppermint, Pau D’Arco, Green, Yerba Mate.)
  • Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, (preferably RAW and soaked )
  • Carrot sticks, Celery sticks, Broccoli, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, any GREEN vegetables
  • Almonds raw and soaked, Almond Butter
  • Fresh-Popped Popcorn (sparingly) – you can add Fresh Butter & Sea Salt
  • All Fresh Vegetables (raw or steamed) EAT PLENTY!
  • Shitake Mushrooms – OKAY
  • Sea Vegetables: Agar, Arame, Dulse, Hijiki, Kelp, Kombu, Nori, Sea Palm, Wakame
  • Vegetable Juices (only green juices with Lemon, or Granny Smith Apples to taste)
  • Fresh Pineapple (sparingly) – helps digest protein; antiparasitic
  • Sprouted grain breads made from: Millet, Kamut, Amaranth, Rice
  • Granny Smith Apples, Lemons, Limes, unsweetened Cranberries, Yellow grapefruit , Kiwi
  • Soy Sauce, Tamari, Miso, Tempeh
  • Lean Organic Meats: Beef, Chicken, Turkey
  • Wild Fish: Deep-sea White Fish and Salmon are particularly good
  • Yeast-free Grains: Millet, Quinoa, Spelt, Basmati Rice, Wild Rice, Amaranth, Brown Rice, Kamut, Buckwheat
  • Red-skinned Potatoes (sparingly) – NO brown-skinned potatoes
  • Cold-pressed Olive Oil; Flax Oil; Coconut Oil (anti-parasitic)
  • White Potatoes, Yams, Sweet Potatoes
  • Stevia
  • Rice Milk, “EdenBlend” Almond Milk
  • Raw Organic Cheese
  • Goat Milk, Goat Cheeses, Goat Kefir
  • RAW Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother)
  • Rice Flour, Buckwheat Flour, Millet
  • Spices – Garlic, Turmeric, unrefined Sea Salt, Ginger, Cinnamon, etc.

Not Recommended

  • Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame, Equal, Sweet ‘n’ Low, NutraSweet
  • Other Sugars: Honey; Maltose, Raw Sugar, Date Sugar, Brown Sugar, Corn
    Syrup, Maple Syrup, Maple Sugar, Fructose, Molasses, Lactose, Glucose
  • Mannitol, Sorbitol, Galactose, Sucrose
  • Condiments, Sauces, and Vinegar
  • Mayonnaise, Mustard, Ketchup, MSG, Pickles
  • Packaged/processed foods; including enriched flour products
  • Malt-containing products
  • Pork
  • Shellfish (mercury content): Shrimp, Lobster, Scavengers, Crabs
  • Wheat, Oats, Barley or Pastas made from these
  • Canned Vegetables, Mushrooms (fungus)
  • Microwave Popcorn (hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated oils)
  • Caffeinated teas, except Green Tea
  • Peanuts, Peanut Butter (possible molds)
  • Wheat Grains, Wheat products, Shredded Wheat
  • Alcoholic beverages, Sodas, Coffee, Regular Black Teas, Fruit Juices
  • Yeast-containing foods – such as bread and pastries
  • Milk, Milk products, Sour Cream, Buttermilk, Cottage Cheese
  • Gluten
